About the event

Kalighat painting started over 150 years ago near the Kalighat temple in Kolkata. Artists would sit near the temple and quickly paint pictures for visitors using bold lines, bright colours, and simple paper.

These paintings showed Hindu gods, goddesses, animals, and also scenes from everyday life – sometimes with a bit of humour or storytelling.

What makes Kalighat art special is:

  • Strong outlines made with brush

  • Flat, bright colours (like red, blue, yellow)

  • Big eyes and expressive faces that tell a story
