About the event

Pattachitra comes from ‘Patta’ (cloth or scroll) and ‘Chitra’ (picture). It’s a traditional artform known for its narrative style, intricate borders, and depiction of deities, animals, and folk tales. These paintings are usually done on cloth or palm leaves using natural colors and fine detailing. In this workshop, we simplify the process on a soft canvas roll, while preserving the core style and storytelling elements.


Day 1: Composition and Preparation

Begin with a brief history of Pattachitra, explore common themes, and choose your subject. Learn to compose your artwork, trace or sketch key elements, and add traditional borders. Outline your design with black ink and fill in the base shades.


Day 2: Detailing & Scroll Mounting

Complete painting the figures in the bold colour palette of Pattachitra, and add intricate details to complete your traditional masterpiece. Finally mount your artwork on wooden dowels to create your Pattachitra scroll ready to…
